Protect Your Child's Teeth with Sealants

What Are Sealants?

Sealants are a safe, painless and low cost way to help protect your child's back teeth from decay. Sealants have been used on children's teeth for more than 10 years. A thin plastic coating (sealant) is bonded to the chewing surfaces of the molars and premolars. The sealant forms a hard shield that keeps food and bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay.

Why Should Children Have Sealants?

The chewing surfaces of the back teeth have tiny grooves that form as each tooth develops. This is where most decay occurs in children. That's because the bristles of a toothbrush can't get down into the grooves to remove the food and bacteria that get trapped there.

Which Teeth Should Be Sealed?

Usually the molars and premolars are sealed. Fluoride helps protect the smooth surfaces on the front teeth and on the sides of the back teeth. But only sealants can keep food and bacteria from getting into the grooves on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth.

Composite Fillings

A composite (tooth colored) filling is used to repair a toothed affected by decay, cracks, fractures, etc. The decayed or affected portion of the tooth will be removed then filled with a composite filling.

There are many types of filling materials available, each with their own advantages and disadvantages, Dr. Flanagin can discuss the best options for restoring your teeth.

Bridges: Restoring Your Smile

A bridge is a way to replace one or more missing teeth. Replacing missing teeth makes it easier to chew. It can improve your appearance. It also helps keep your teeth, gums and jaw healthy.

Why a Bridge?

Spaces left by missing teeth may affect your ability to chew properly. If even one tooth is missing, other teeth may slowly shift out of place. This changes the way your teeth fit together. A poor bite may make your jaw sore. Your teeth may become harder to clean, leading to tooth decay and gum disease. Shifting teeth may change your smile.

Root Canal

Natural teeth are meant to last a lifetime. Even if one tooth becomes injured or decayed, it can often be saved through a specialized dental procedure known as a root canal (endodontic) treatment.

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment usually involves the removal of the tooth's pulp, a small thread-like tissue that was important for tooth development. Once removed, it is replaced with materials that seal off the root canal from its surrounding tissues. Years ago, diseased or injured teeth were often extracted. Today, even if the pulp in one of the roots becomes injured or infected, the tooth often can be saved through root canal treatment. Endodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases or injuries to the dental pulp.

Dentures

Is your loss of teeth causing premature aging?

Losing one or more teeth creates a gap in your smile, affects you ability to chew properly, and can alter your diet and nutrition. While these are all serious issues, did you know tooth loss also leads to bone loss?

With a combination of modern dental technology and an artistic approach we will provide you with professional advice prior to choosing the handcrafted denture that suits you best.

Dentures

Dentures replace all the missing teeth in the arch to restore your appearance. Without the support from your denture,it could affect your overall health, change your facial structures, and make you look older.

Immediate Dentures

When the time comes for the natural teeth to be extracted, an immediate denture technique can be used to avoid the embarrassment of having to go without teeth. The immediate dentures are placed right after your teeth are extracted.

Crown

You may need a crown if:

  • your tooth has fractured
  • An old crown or filling has failed
  • You've had root canal therapy
  • You have a very large cavity
  • You'd like o improve a tooth's appearance

Traditional Crown:

A crown is a custom-made restoration that completely covers your tooth. Crowns not only repair and strengthen a damaged tooth, they can also be used to improve your appearance by covering a discolored or misshapen tooth.

The Procedure

Crowns require at least two visits. We'll prepare and shape your tooth, then take impressions. A dental lab will make a model from these impressions, and use the model to create your new crown from porcelain, gold or other alloys, or a combination of these materials. Dr. Flanagin will discuss the appropriate treatment concerning this procedure.
